Americano padel: rules, scoring and how it works

Americano is the classic social padel tournament. You play with a new partner every round, collect your own points, and the player with the most points at the end wins. It is the easiest way to mix a group and make sure everyone plays with everyone.

The basic rules

Each match is played to a fixed number of points, for example 16, 21, 24 or 32. Serves usually rotate every few points, and the match ends when the total is reached, for example 13–11 in a 24-point match.

Every player is credited with the points their team scored. Your total across all rounds decides your place in the standings.

How the rotation works

Partners and opponents change every round. The aim is that everyone partners everyone else once, and faces each player as evenly as possible. With 8 players on 2 courts, a full Americano is 7 rounds: one round for each possible partner.

  • 4 players, 1 court: 3 rounds
  • 8 players, 2 courts: 7 rounds
  • 12 players, 3 courts: 11 rounds (often shortened)
  • 16 players, 4 courts: 15 rounds (often shortened)

Choosing points per match

Pick the points from your court time. A 24-point match takes roughly 12–15 minutes. If you have two hours and 7 rounds to play, 16 or 21 points per match fits better.

Americano vs Mexicano

Americano plans the rounds in advance, so you know you will play with everyone. Mexicano decides each round from the current standings, so matches stay closer when levels are mixed. Many groups start with Americano and switch to Mexicano once they know each other.

Running Americano with Padel Maestro

Planning a fair rotation by hand gets hard beyond 8 players, especially when someone has to sit out. Padel Maestro generates every round automatically, spreads partners and opponents evenly, rotates sit-outs fairly and keeps a live leaderboard every player can follow on their phone.

You can also play Americano with fixed partners, where teams instead of players rotate opponents. Padel Maestro is free on iPhone, Android and the web.
